The rules of life - and what they have to do with dog training
Life has rules. It doesn't matter whether you believe in them or not - they still apply. You can play by them or ignore them, but that doesn't mean they stop working. We find these rules everywhere - even in education. And those who understand and follow them will always reach their goal faster, more stable and more harmoniously.
Rules of the game in dog training
There is no magic and no shortcuts in dog training. There are principles - and they are non-negotiable. If you are not consistent, your dog will not listen reliably. If you are not firm, your dog will not follow. If you don't lead clearly, your dog will take the lead. These rules are non-negotiable. They always apply - whether you know them or not, whether you believe in them or not.
If you play against the rules, you lose energy
I experience it time and again in my everyday life as a trainer: people who think that these rules don't apply to them. They want to go their own way - "instinctively", "differently", "by feel". But the dogs show them time and again that they are swimming against the tide. They try hard, they try a lot, but they don't make any progress. Why is that? Because they are not playing by the rules. Clear communication, consistency and commitment are not options - they are the foundation. If you ignore them, you will inevitably end up in frustration, confusion or conflict.
Nature is always honest
Nature never plays against its own rules. It does not judge, it does not evaluate - it simply shows the truth. A plant that doesn't get water dies. Not because it is being "punished", but because that is the rule. It's the same in education: if you work against natural principles, the system collapses - not out of malice, but out of logic.
The task of trainer and client
I didn't invent the rules of the game. My job as a trainer is simply to make you aware of these rules of the game - clearly, understandably and applicable. Your job as a client is to understand them, internalize them and act accordingly. Because only when you play by these rules will your dog really start to develop into a reliable everyday partner.
Conclusion
Life has rules. Whether you know them or not doesn't change the fact that they apply. If you respect them, the system works for you. If you ignore them, the system works against you. This is true in nature, in life and in education. So learn the rules - and play by them. Then the game will not only run more smoothly, but you will also win it - for you and for your dog.
